Keeping speed low with Speed Indicator Signs

Keeping speed low with Speed Indicator Signs 1

Arriva UK Bus is a major bus operator in the United Kingdom and has bus depots situated throughout their operating area and are responsible for running the local bus services in their area. Coeval was approached by the Luton Depot to help improve safety around their site.

With large vehicles moving about and engineering operations under way, drivers need to be aware of their speed and keep to the low, 5mph, speed limit which is there to protect people on site. Arriva wanted something that would alert drivers of any vehicles on the site to their speed limit and influence their behaviour, so they slow down.

Coeval proposed the use of their Speed Indicator Signs (SIDs), one in each direction, to highlight to drivers the speed they are traveling and if that complies with the site speed limit. If they are complying the 5mph speed limit their speed shows in green, if they are exceeding the 5mph limit their speed shows in red.

LED signs are more easily noticed by drivers than static signs and are visible in all conditions, including at night. These vehicle-activated signs have a robust build, with high-power LEDs that can be seen clearly even in inclement weather. With our optional Cloud Control application for remote monitoring and data provision, users can learn more about driver behaviour in the area of the sign installation.

Keeping speed low with Speed Indicator Signs 2Outcome

These signs were quick and easy to install so created minimal disruption to the bus depot. Once installed they immediately started to raise awareness in relation to drivers’ speeds and helped to improve the safety on site as drivers recognise the need to slow down.

“I am very satisfied with the product and it has had an immediate impact on cutting speed in and out of the depot by all traffic.”

What our clients say

Connect Plus Services M25 Dartford Crossing

‘Even a short closure of the tunnel causes great congestion in the area, and if an over height vehicle were to cause that level of damage, the tunnel could be closed for hours, if not days, which would bring the whole of the South East of England to a standstill.

When the Coeval over height vehicle detectors were first installed, we were talking about 10’s of vehicles a day that we were stopping; we are now down to low single figures, 4 or 5 vehicles a day we need to extract for being over height, so it’s a great improvement in efficiency through the crossing.’
