Achieve circa 50% saving by retrofitting your existing signage

Achieve circa 50% saving by retrofitting your existing signage 1

Why pay thousands to replace your signs when you can retrofit them, getting the same functionality for a fraction of the cost? You could save circa 50% on retrofitting your existing signs, allowing your budgets to go that little bit further for other projects.

It’s with this thought in mind that Coeval has produced a retrofit sign controller. These controllers are capable of being ‘cuckooed’ into other types of sign carcass; the only parts you need to make sure are still fully functional are the LEDs. Stirling Council, Bear Scotland and Denbighshire have already taken this initiative and begun making this transition.

The intelligent function with this controller is that it will transform your existing signs from standalone units into signs with remote access, allowing you to control and program your own signage network from the office.

Why retrofit?

Even the most robust signage doesn’t last forever. With retrofitting, you can keep what works and replace what doesn’t in a cost-effective and practical procedure.

Even if your signs aren’t at the point of malfunctioning, the technology inside of them may be well out of date. With more and more available options for effectively managing traffic and informing drivers, implementing new technology enables signs to be more sophisticated – saving lives in the process.

With the sign’s structure already in place, several stages of the construction and installation process are not needed. The original sign carcass doesn’t go to waste, and you can drastically cut back on the downtime that would otherwise occur when taking down the old sign and putting up the new.

Retrofitting options

The controller itself is capable of running on 12v or 24v supplies, so can, therefore, be utilised in both mains-driven PSU format or from a solar supply.

The controller has 6 outputs for driving the LED displays:

  • Output 1 – Flashing Ambers 1 (top pair)
  • Output 2 – Flashing Ambers 2 (bottom pair)
  • Output 3 – Message 1 first section (roundel or school legend)
  • Output 4 – Message 2 First Section (roundel or school legend)
  • Output 5 – Message 1 second section (TEXT)
  • Output 6 – Message 2 second section (TEXT)

As the above demonstrates, the sign is capable of either driving single or dual message faces – making it an ideal replacement for school signs with speed options outside of the school timetable, as well as general speed signs with the main objective to reduce speeding drivers within a specific area.

The signs are configured via a FREE software package and can be fully timetable controlled with up to 10 switching times. Operation is convenient and flexible, with a bluetooth-enabled Android device allowing easy remote control; operation training can be provided if this if required.

The other option is to configure and check the sign via ‘cloud control’. This is done via a GSM modem with a customer-supplied data-enabled SIM card; It gives the user the ability to configure the operation of the sign for up to a full 3 years in advance, should the timetabled option be used.

The controller is DIN rail mounted and comes with its own light sensors, ensuring that the dimming facility can still be used. The power can be taken from any existing 12v / 24v source, or new PSUs can be supplied if requested.

At Coeval, we are always looking at the most practical way to solve our customers’ traffic management needs, and our retrofit sign controller is another example of how that focus is keeping us at the leading edge of the industry. We pledge to continue to design, manufacture, install and maintain products that will assist Highway agencies and City Councils to make UK roads and railways a safer place.
